AFP,  28 February 2018 - The United States and three European allies condemned Iran on Tuesday after the United Nations found Tehran had violated the arms embargo on Yemen by failing to block supplies of missiles and drones to Houthi rebels.
Britain, France, Germany and the United States urged Iran to “immediately cease all activities that are inconsistent or would violate” the UN resolution that established the arms embargo in 2015.
The joint condemnation came a day after Russia vetoed a British-drafted resolution renewing sanctions on Yemen and citing “particular concern” for the report’s findings about Iran.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern earlier on Tuesday at the high number of executions in Iran.

Geneva, Reuters, February 28, 2018 - As Iran’s justice minister addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, protesters rallied outside against the senior official who is on European Union and Swiss sanctions lists over alleged involvement in violations including arbitrary arrests and a rise in executions while he was president of the Tehran judiciary.
Alireza Avai was a senior judiciary official during the 1980s and the Mujahedin-e Khalq, an Iranian opposition group, accuses him of playing a role in the Islamic Republic’s execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.
He said a recent reform of its drug laws should lead to fewer executions after the UN Secretary General said he remained alarmed about their high number - nearly 500 last year.

Crime Against Humanity in Eastern Ghouta by the Mullahs’ Regime

Call for urgent international action to expel IRGC from Syria

Call for urgent international action to expel IRGC from Syria

The mullahs' anti-human regime is continuing its criminal attacks and killings against the people in Eastern Ghouta of Syria in violation of the UN Security Council resolution 2401, which was ratified unanimously on February 24. These attacks are a clear example of crime against humanity and war crime.
Following the ratification of the Security Council resolution that sets a 30-day ceasefire, Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the mullahs’ regime, announced impudently on February 25 that the resolution does not include the Eastern Ghouta. Once again, it was proved that the mullahs’ regime does not respect any international rule and law, and that the war in Syria is so vital for this medieval regime.

The strike by marketers and shopkeepers in the Iranian Kurdistan cities of Baneh and Piranshahr, who had gone on strike on Saturday February 24 in protest of closing border markets, continued on Monday for the third day. Marketers and shopkeepers in Sardasht also joined the strike on Monday, February 26, and refused to open their shops. The mullahs’ regime, in fear of spreading the strike to other strata of the population, deployed a large number of riot guards, intelligence agents and plainclothes agents in different parts of these cities.

AFP, United Nations , 26 February 2018-- Russia vetoed Monday a UN draft resolution presented by Britain that would have pressured Iran over its failure to block supplies of missiles to Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The text, strongly supported by the United States, won 11 favorable votes at the 15-member Security Council but was blocked by Russia’s veto. China and Kazakhstan abstained, while Bolivia also voted against the measure.
Nine votes and no vetoes from the five permanent council members – Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States – are required to adopt resolutions at the Security Council.

Avaei was one of the officials involved in Massacre of political prisoners in 1988 in Iran

Simultaneous with arrival of the Iranian regime’s Minister of Justice, Alireza Avaei, in Switzerland on February 26, Marc Bonnant, a distinguished Swiss lawyer, submitted a complaint on behalf of the NCRI to the Swiss General Prosecutor, Michael Lauber, calling for prosecution of Avaei for crimes against humanity. Avaei was one of the officials involved in Massacre of political prisoners in 1988.
The complaint file that contains criminal records of Avaei states that welcoming him in Switzerland “profoundly contradicts morale and the rights” and “the Human Rights Council of the United Nations is wrongly welcoming him to speak ironically about the human rights.” The complaint goes on saying that Avaei’s record “has earned him financial sanctions within the European Union ” and he is also on the Swiss blacklist for “human rights violations, arbitrary arrests, denial of the rights of prisoners and executions.”

The European Union added him to its sanctions lists in October 2011, stressing that “As President of the Tehran Judiciary he has been responsible for human rights violations, arbitrary arrests, denials of prisoners’ rights and an increase in executions.”

Press Release: Ambassador Haley on Failure to Act to Hold Iran Accountable for Arms Embargo Violations

US Ambassador Nikki Haley

US Ambassador Nikki Haley

February 26, 2018-- Today, in spite of the overwhelming evidence provided by the UN’s independent Yemen Panel of Experts on Iran’s violations of the arms embargo in Yemen, the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have called out Iran for its actions. The Panel of Experts’ final report outlined Iran’s failure to prevent the transfer of Iranian arms and related material, including ballistic missiles, military equipment, and unmanned aerial vehicle technology, to Houthi militias in Yemen.
“Russia has repeatedly stopped the Security Council from acting against the barbaric Assad regime in Syria. Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran. In spite of a mountain of credible, independent evidence showing Iran violated the Yemen arms embargo, resulting in a series of attacks on civilian targets, Russia prevented accountability and endangered the entire region. Eleven of 15 Security Council members were united in holding Iran accountable. We thank them for their strong commitment to address Iran’s threat to regional security. If Russia is going to use its veto to block action against Iran’s dangerous and destabilizing conduct, then the United States and our partners will need to take actions against Iran that the Russians cannot block,” said Ambassador Haley.‎

UN News, Feb. 26, 2018 - Syria’s war-battered east Ghouta, the troubled Kasais region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Northern Rakhine state in Myanmar, where violence has sparked a major exodus of Muslim Rohingyas, were all in the spotlight as the Geneva-based Human Rights Council opened its session today, with UN officials warning that these situations spiraled into crisis “because not enough was done, early and collectively, to prevent the rising horrors.”

Russias Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says end to hostilities will come only when all sides agree on how to execute U.N.-backed truce

The Wall Street Journal, Feb. 26, 2018 - Russia said Monday it wasn’t prepared to implement a cease-fire in Syria endorsed by the U.N. Security Council, even as European and U.S. officials demanded an immediate end to the fighting.
In a televised news conference, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said there would be no quick end to the attacks on Eastern Ghouta near Damascus or in Idlib Province as Moscow supported the Syrian government’s bombing raids there, adding that all sides must first agree on how to implement the cease-fire so it “would be complete and full scale across all of Syria.”
The clash reopened international divisions just two days after the Security Council agreed unanimously on a text for a cease-fire that was prompted by the worsening humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta. The document didn’t fix a date for the suspension of hostilities.

26 February 2018 - A warning by Iranian police that women could be jailed for up to a decade for joining protests against compulsory veiling has put dozens at immediate risk of unjust imprisonment and represents an alarming escalation of the authorities’ violent crackdown on women’s rights, said Amnesty International.
More than 35 women have been violently attacked and arrested in Tehran alone since December 2017 for taking part in ongoing peaceful protests against the discriminatory and abusive practice of compulsory veiling. In an official statement on 23 February, the police warned that women would now be charged with “inciting corruption and prostitution,” which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. One of the protestors, Narges Hosseini, was today put on trial before an Ershad (Moral Guidance) court in Tehran on charges that include this new charge.

A new wave of airstrikes and shelling on eastern suburbs of the Syrian capital Damascus left at least 22 people dead and more than a dozen wounded Saturday, raising the death toll of a week of bombing in the area to nearly 500, including scores of women and children.
BEIRUT, Washington Post, February 26, 2018 -   The White House is renewing its call for an “immediate end” to offensive operations in Syria.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Syria is “terrorizing hundreds of thousands of civilians” with air strikes, artillery, rockets and “a looming ground attack.”
She adds that, “The regime’s use of chlorine gas as a weapon only intensifies this.”
More than 500 people have been killed since last week in the eastern Ghouta region, where activists on Sunday reported a suspected poison gas attack.
A U.N. Security Council resolution for a 30-day cease-fire across Syria has failed to stop the carnage.
The U.S. last year bombed a Syrian air base in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack against civilians.
Sanders said that Trump “put the Assad regime on notice some time ago.”

Russia and Iran cynically exploit divisions over Syria

DAVID GARDNER

Russia and Iran have turned two ‘de-escalation zones’ into the seventh circle of hell
Financial Times, Feb. 27, 2018 - To judge by the shrill rhetoric of US, Israeli and Saudi leaders, the expansion of Iran’s power across the Middle East has replaced Isis as the greatest danger to the region and even global security.
Yet this trio’s drive against the influence of Tehran, which moved up a gear this month, is not wholly convincing. Israel ordered air strikes on Iranian targets as the US and Saudi Arabia cheered from the sidelines. They agreed Israel was within its rights to blitz a dozen targets, after anti-aircraft batteries inside Syria shot down an Israeli jet, in action after an Iranian drone apparently crossed from Syrian into Israeli airspace. Yet the trio do not appear to be totally in sync.
Israel, for example, says it will go to war against Iran and its partners, in particular Hizbollah, the Lebanese paramilitary movement, to stop them consolidating their position inside Syria and opening a new front close to Israel’s borders, or from increasing their arsenal of missiles in Lebanon.

GENEVA (21 February 2018) – Since the Syrian Government and their allies escalated their offensive against opposition-held Eastern Ghouta on 4 February, there have been more than 1,200 civilian casualties, including at least 346 killed and 878 injured, mostly in airstrikes hitting residential areas, according to reports documented by the UN Human Rights Office.
Ninety-two of these civilian deaths allegedly occurred in just one 13-hour period on Monday. These figures are far from comprehensive, representing only those cases the UN Human Rights Office has managed to document in the midst of the chaos and destruction in Eastern Ghouta.

U.S. President Donald Trump has long railed against the 2015 nuclear deal for reasons including its limited duration and the fact it does not cover Iran’s ballistic missile programme. He has threatened to pull out unless European allies help “fix” the agreement with a follow-up accord.

Iran: At least 70 dervish women protesters taken to Qarchak Prison

Seventy of the women arrested during the dervishes’ gathering in Golestan Haftom Ave. in Tehran, have been brutalized and taken to the Quarantine Ward 3 of the notorious Qarchak Prison in Varamin.
A spokesman for the State Security Force acknowledged that at least 300 people were arrested during a raid on the protest gathering of dervishes in Tehran launched on Monday night, February 19 and carrying on until Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018. The actual number of those arrested must be considered higher.
A large number of those arrested were women, 70 of whom have been transferred to an overcrowded ward in the notorious Qarchak Prison for women.
There is no information available on the fate of other women arrested in the dervishes’ gathering.
The NCRI Women’s Committee issued an urgent call on February 20, urging international human rights organizations to undertake immediate measures to have the arrested women released.

DEBUNKING THE IRAN REGIME'S LIES ABOUT THE MEK: NO, THE MEK AREN’T MARXIST

DEBUNKING THE IRAN REGIME'S LIES ABOUT THE MEK: NO, THE MEK AREN’T MARXIST

by Poorang Novak
It is no secret that the Iranian Regime (both Mullah and Shah) have used disinformation campaigns to attack and discredit the Iranian Resistance group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
One of those disinformation campaigns is the ‘Islamist Marxist’ label that the Shah’s Secret Police (SAVAK) originally used to disparage the MEK in order to undermine its support among the devout Iranian people because the Shah was scared of the MEK’s potential to mobilise Iranians- particularly the youth- against the monarchy. The Shah and SAVAK also used it to disparage other political opponents of the monarchy.
Why? Because of the public perception of the word in Iran as being synonymous with atheism, materialism, and Westernism.
Newspaper reports didn’t help clear up the matter because all opponents of the monarchy (and there were many) would be placed in the same paragraph, meaning that the MEK would be listed in the same paragraphs as the Communist Party and the Marxist People’s Fedayeen, which may have given the false impression that their policies were similar.
After the 1979 Revolution, the MEK wanted to establish a democratic government, while Ruhollah Khomeini and his mullahs wanted a fundamentalist theocracy and the two groups clashed. After the Shah left, the mullahs began to attack the MEK using their terrorist proxy thugs.
The mullahs and their Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) continued to misrepresent the MEK and referred to them as godless Marxists. However, the mullahs and the MOIS went much further than the Shah and the SAVAK in this regard, because the mullahs are alarmed by the MEK’s popularity and see the MEK as a threat to the Regime.
In 1981, MEK leader Massoud Rajavi: “Every high school student knows that believing in God, Jesus Christ, and Muhammad is incompatible with the philosophy of Marxism. But for dictators like Khomeini, ‘Islamic Marxist’ is a very profitable phrase to use against any opposition. If Jesus Christ and Muhammad were alive and protesting against Khomeini, he would call them Marxists, too.”
To be clear, the MEK has never referred to itself as Marxist, socialist, or communist, according to Iran historian Ervand Abrahamian, and they have shunned Marxist philosophy. Massoud Rajavi has even said that the MEK avoided the socialist label to avoid being misrepresented in the people’s minds.
The MEK actually spent the first six years of its existence studying Islam, philosophy, history and economics in order to formulate its political positions based on a democratic and tolerant interpretation of Islam and to prepare a strategy to replace the Shah’s dictatorial monarchy.
In 1982, Massoud Rajavi said: “The Islam we want is nationalist, democratic, progressive, and not opposed to science or civilization. We believe that there is no contradiction between modern science and true Islam, and we believe that in Islam there must be no compulsion or dictatorship.”
However, after 50 years of being described as Marxists, especially during the Cold War, many people wrongly believe this about the MEK. We must be clear, the MEK is not Marxist; they are freedom fighters who believe in democracy and a tolerant Islam.
This is part of a series. See the previous debunking article here.

Feb. 20, 2018 - According to State news media the police arrested more than 300 protesters, most of the members of the Gonabadi dervishes, a mystical Sufi strain of Islam that the clerical government has designated a challenge to mainstream Shiite theology.
The confrontation started Monday night when the dervishes, recognizable by the thick mustaches they wear by religious decree, gathered in front of a police station to demand the release of some members who had been arrested. Violence broke out when security officers arrived.
